Contemplative Practices For Children & Families

The spiritual practices necessary for just living are not just important for adults – they are important for children and families as well. Too often readiness for spiritual practice is confused with readiness for engagement with sophisticated theological reflection. But such an understanding passes over how critical a human person’s early years are for not only social, emotional, and cognitive development, but also for spiritual development as well.

At the Center for Spiritual Imagination, we have created a series of programs that apply the best of current research in neurobiological development with ancient spiritual practices to engage the body, mind, and spirit in ways that nurture openness to God, self-awareness, and empathy. We also conceive of the spiritual development of children as happening in the context of family systems, and our programming supports parents in developing their own practice and nurture the spiritual lives of their children.

Fellowship In Faith: Intergenerational Enrichment

Kate Akerman

Fellowship in Faith is a model for intergenerational spiritual formation, allowing individuals of all ages and stages of life to learn together. The ethos of this model involves three core values: connection, imagination, and joy. Fellowship in Faith for adults and children involves weekly gatherings centered on a central theme for everyone. These gatherings offer opportunities to explore this theme through the arts, movement, spiritual practice, and storytelling. Fellowship in Faith is held on Sunday mornings at the Mercer School of Theology.

At the Center, we believe that our spiritual lives connect us more deeply with God and others in community. We believe that our spiritual lives inspire our imaginations, helping us to envision and even playfully embody new ways of being in the world. Finally, we believe that our spiritual lives bring us joy. In many ways, an awakened spirit brings us face-to-face with challenges within ourselves and in our world, but the sustenance for just living each and every day is found in the joy of an abiding connection with God.

Cathedral For Kids Liturgy

Kris Vieira

Cathedral for Kids is a unique worship experience designed for the needs of the young and the young at heart. Designed for adults and children worshipping in the same space, Cathedral for Kids reflects the meeting point between traditional Book of Common Prayer worship and the liturgical hospitality that ensures that God’s house is a place for everyone. This service, embodying the child-oriented ethos of Fred Rogers, includes traditional Eucharist, incisive yet playful storytelling, and lively music led by young musicians.

We have put together an interactive video series of our Cathedral for Kids Sunday service for you to enjoy at home! Please visit incarnationgc.org/family to watch the videos and download the guided reading.

This is wisdom in action, the sacred pouring into the ordinary, love wildly blossoming in the most broken of spaces.”
