The Ecowomanist Spiritual Imagination with Dr. Melanie L. Harris
Saturday, April 13, 2024
9am ET
Online
We begin with contemplative practice that honors the Earth and all of Creation before engaging in conversation with Dr. Harris on the neglected history of African-American women who engage in theological and religious reflection on their ethical and moral responsibility to care for the earth.
Dr. Harris is Professor of Black Feminist Thought and Womanist Theology jointly appointed with Wake Forest School of Divinity and the African American Studies program at Wake Forest University. Her research and scholarship critically examines intersections between race, religion, gender and environmental ethics. She is the author of many scholarly articles and books including Gifts of Virtue: Alice Walker and Womanist Ethics, and Ecowomanism: Earth Honoring Faiths.

Monasticism has always been a response to the deep human longing for God. From the desert fathers and mothers of Egypt and Palestine to the monasteries of Europe, it has shaped lives of prayer, simplicity, and service for centuries. But this course isn’t about the monasticism of the past—it’s about new expressions of monasticism emerging today, rooted in the same longing but responding to the unique challenges and possibilities of our time.
